Major Cause of the Devastating Flash Flood in Rasuwa District, Nepal

It has been revealed that the main cause of the devastating flash flood that hit the Rasuwa district of Nepal on August 26, 2026, was not heavy monsoon rainfall, but rather the collapse of a large portion of a glacier and a massive ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal Tibet border.

Major Causes of the Rasuwa Flood


1. Collapse of a Large Portion of Glacier and Rock:
Scientific studies and satellite imagery show that a huge volume of ice, snow, and rock suddenly collapsed in the high Himalayan region. This event is reported to have occurred around the Langtang Lirung area and the Lhende Khola valley.

2. Lack of Heavy Rainfall in the Local Area:
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, there was no heavy rainfall, or only extremely minimal rainfall, in that specific area of Rasuwa on that morning. As a result, local residents and relevant authorities were completely caught by surprise when the flood suddenly hit.

3. Massive Debris Flow and Formation of Temporary Lakes:
When the huge mass of ice and rock suddenly fell into the narrow river valley, the natural flow of the river was temporarily blocked. During this process, temporary and unstable barrier lakes were formed in the upper reaches.

Later, as these unstable lakes and water blockages burst or breached rapidly, a massive debris flow consisting of ice, rock, mud, and water rushed downstream. This created an extremely swift and devastating flood situation along the waterways of the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.
