Rajya Laxmi Devi, Sher Bahadur Shah, Shukra Raj Shastri, Subarna Prabha, Surendra Bir Bikram Shah, and Tanka Prasad Acharya Biography

Rajya Laxmi Devi
was the senior queen of King Rajendra and the mother of King Surendra. She was a staunch supporter of Mukhtiyar Rana Jang Pande. Her anti-British stance and persistent efforts to secure the crown for her son, Surendra, led to significant political instability in Nepal following the fall of Bhim Sen Thapa. In October 1841, she embarked on a pilgrimage to Benares but tragically died of Awal fever while crossing the Tarai region.

Sher Bahadur Shah, a prince, was the illegitimate son of King Pratap Singh and Maiju Rani. In a dramatic and violent turn of events, he killed his half-brother, the regent ex-king Ran Bahadur, during an argument in the royal court. Mere moments later, he was strangled to death by Bal Narsingh Konwar on April 25, 1806.

Shukra Raj Shastri was a dedicated teacher and the son of social reformer Madhav Raj Joshi. He established the Nepal Civil Rights Committee in 1937, aiming to promote social reform through the teachings of Hindu literature. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, whom he had met in Calcutta, Shastri became deeply involved in activism. Despite having no ties to the revolutionary Nepal People's Congress, he was arrested in November 1940 for his anti-establishment ideas. He was executed on January 27, 1941, alongside two members of the party.

Subarna Prabha was the second queen of King Ran Bahadur and the mother of Ranodyut Shah, the king’s legitimate heir. She assumed the regency after King Ran Bahadur abdicated in favor of Girvan Juddha. However, her regency ended when Queen Raj Rajeswari returned to Kathmandu in February 1803. After the assassination of her husband in April 1806, she committed Sati.

Surendra Bir Bikram Shah was the son of King Rajendra and ruled Nepal from 1847 to 1881. He ascended the throne on May 12, 1847, after his father was deposed. Surendra was born on October 20, 1829, and reigned during a turbulent period in Nepalese history. He passed away on May 17, 1881.

Tanka Prasad Acharya was a prominent politician born in Kathmandu in 1912. He founded the Nepali Praja Parishad (Nepal People's Congress) in 1936. Arrested in October 1940 for his activities against the Rana regime, he was spared the death sentence due to his Brahmin status and was instead sentenced to life imprisonment. After his release in 1950, he revived the party and played a key role in the country’s politics. He served as the Minister for Home Affairs from 1954 to 1955 and later as Prime Minister from January 1956 to 1957. He died on April 23, 1992.
