Preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicated that the Lexus was traveling at excessive speed and lost control while attempting an overtaking maneuver. An official from the Ogun State Police also stated that a burst tire may have contributed to the driver losing control of the vehicle.
Two passengers in the Lexus, identified as Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, died at the scene. They were described as close friends and integral members of Joshua’s team.
Anthony Joshua, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment and observation. Another passenger was injured, while two others escaped unharmed. Matchroom Boxing and local authorities confirmed that Joshua is in stable condition.
Footage circulating on social media showed the severely damaged Lexus SUV, with Joshua visibly wincing in pain as he was helped out of the wreckage by onlookers. He remained conscious and was able to communicate with his family and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who called to offer his condolences and wish him a speedy recovery.
The crash occurred just days after Joshua’s sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, 2025. Paul later shared a message on X, saying he was “praying for the lost lives, AJ, and everyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”
