Steve McMichael, a Hall of Famer and key player on the famous 1985 Chicago Bears defense, has passed away at the age of 67.
The news was shared by Jarrett Payton, son of McMichael’s former teammate Walter Payton. Jarrett also presented McMichael at his Hall of Fame induction in 2024.
McMichael, nicknamed "Mongo," started his NFL career with the Patriots in 1980 but was released before the 1981 season. The Bears picked him up, and he went on to play 13 seasons in Chicago, appearing in 191 games. He helped the team win Super Bowl XX — a sweet moment against the team that let him go.
He later played his final season with the Green Bay Packers in 1994.
During his career, McMichael earned two first-team and two second-team All-Pro honors, and made the Pro Bowl twice. In 2021, he was diagnosed with ALS and had entered hospice care shortly before his passing.
McMichael will be remembered not only for his toughness on the field, but also for his big personality and love for the game. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.
