| Historical Facts of Rani Pokhari |
Rani Pokhari is located in the central region of Kathmandu. It was artificially built by King Pratap Malla in the 17th century for his queen. The pond covers an area of approximately 62 ropani and 13 aana. This sacred site is opened to the public only once a year on Bhai Tika, during which sisters pray for the long life and prosperity of their brothers.
Construction of Rani Pokhari
Rani Pokhari was constructed in 1665 B.S., reflecting the ancient art, architecture, and historical philosophy of that era. The pond’s water was brought from several holy places, such as Gosaikunda and other sacred sites. Inside the temple located at the center of the pond, there are statues of the queen’s two brothers and an elephant, symbolizing love and devotion.
During the massive earthquake of 1990 B.S., the temple of Rani Pokhari was severely damaged. To preserve its historical and cultural significance, Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher Rana renovated it and restored its original appearance.
Again, on 12th Baisakh 2072 B.S., a devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale caused serious damage to the monument. One year after the disaster, the Honorable President Bidhya Devi Bhandari announced the reconstruction of Rani Pokhari. The renovation and restoration works are now in the completion phase.
Historical Legend
According to legend, after the construction of Rani Pokhari, King Pratap Malla began bathing there daily. One day, he encountered a mysterious woman (often described as a wretch or spirit) and gradually developed affection for her. Over time, the woman became pregnant with the king. Soon after, the king’s health began to deteriorate, he grew weaker and thinner day by day.
Concerned about his worsening condition, the royal family initiated an investigation. Eventually, they discovered the truth about the woman and her supernatural influence over the king. To save King Pratap Malla from her spiritual power, priests (purohits) were summoned, and through various rituals, the spirit was subdued.
