Newark Mayor Arrested During Protest at Immigration Center
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka

In a dramatic standoff at a federal immigration detention center, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested after joining a protest against the opening of the newly constructed Delaney Hall facility. The center, run by private prison contractor GEO Group, has sparked controversy due to alleged permit violations. Baraka, a Democrat and gubernatorial hopeful, was taken into custody after refusing orders from Homeland Security to vacate the premises. Eyewitnesses described a tense confrontation, with pushing and shouting before officers swarmed the mayor and placed him in an unmarked vehicle. Meanwhile, three New Jersey lawmakers—Reps. Menendez, McIver, and Watson Coleman—entered the facility unannounced, citing oversight duties. Baraka’s wife claims her husband was unfairly targeted, and protesters outside the center are calling for his release. Homeland Security maintains the group forced entry and says lawmakers did not request a proper tour.
