Veteran Bollywood actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani has passed away at the age of 84 in Mumbai on October 20, 2025, following a brief illness. Born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Asrani trained at the Film and Television Institute of India before embarking on a career spanning over five decades and more than 350 films. He was best known for his iconic role as the jailer in the 1975 classic Sholay, delivering the unforgettable line, "Angrezon ke zamaane ka jailer." Celebrated for his versatility, Asrani excelled as a comedian, character actor, director, and singer, with notable performances in films like Chupke Chupke, Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar, and the Dhamaal and Bhool Bhulaiyaa franchises. A Filmfare Award winner for Best Comedian, his contributions to Hindi cinema earned widespread admiration, with condolences pouring in from fans, colleagues, and public figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His final rites were held in Mumbai, attended by family and close friends.
